The British wife of Donald Trump’s Treasury secretary has apologised for a “highly insensitive” Instagram post that saw her lash out sarcastically at another user.
Scottish-born Louise Linton, who is married to Steve Mnuchin, posted a picture of herself getting off a US government jet, accompanied by hashtags of designer labels.
Her post said: “Great #daytrip to #Kentucky! #nicest #people #beautiful #countryside #rolandmouret pants #tomford sunnies, #hermesscarf #valentinorockstudheels #valentino #usa.”
When one user, Jenni Miller, questioned who had paid for their “little getaway”, adding the hashtag #deplorable, Ms Linton hit back with a post about who pays the most taxes – and called the woman “adorably out of touch”.

She wrote: “Have you given more to the economy than me or my husband? Either as an individual earner in taxes OR in self sacrifice to your country? I’m pretty sure we paid more taxes towards our day “trip” than you did. Pretty sure the amount we sacrifice per year is a lot more than you’d be willing to sacrifice if the choice was yours.
“You’re adorably out of touch. Thanks for the passive aggressive nasty comment. Your kids look very cute. I know your mad but deep down you’re really nice and so am I.”
Following a barrage of criticism from other social media users, she set her Instagram account to private and made her tweets “protected”.
On Tuesday, she issued an apology through her publicist.
It said: “I apologise for my post on social media yesterday as well as my response. It was inappropriate and highly insensitive.”
A Treasury Department spokesman told the Washington Post that Monday’s flight was cleared by appropriate government channels, and that the couple had covered the cost of Ms Linton’s travel.
The spokesman told the newspaper that Ms Linton had not received any income for hashtagging the fashion labels in her Instagram post.
Ms Linton, 36, and Mr Mnuchin, 54, married in June in a ceremony attended by Mr Trump.
Privately educated and born in Edinburgh, Ms Linton moved to the US after school and has attempted to break into showbusiness, appearing briefly in a 2007 movie with Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep, before ending up with a series of B-movie appearances.
Her husband worked at Goldman Sachs before founding a hedge fund, buying and selling a bank and producing several movies, leaving him worth an estimated fortune of $300m (£233m).
